Dare to Be...the Same?

I'm Jason Boom, writing as a guest here at BuzzMyBlog.com. Jeff's site, as many of you know, emphasizes his difference from other make money bloggers. Instead of monetizing his site with tons of ads, he wants to help you and me gain momentum in this difficult niche. He wants to help others make money. That is different than many other blogs out there, but I'm not here today to talk about being different, I want to talk about being the same.

There are certain things bloggers should want to do differently. We should want to write in a different style from other bloggers in our niche. We should want to create a website that has a different logo, theme, and colors than other bloggers in our niche. We should want to find unique marketing ideas to set ourselves apart from the masses. All in all, we should want difference on most things considering our blog. It's what helps us grow our readership. Why would someone stick around our blog if we looked and sounded like every other blogger? They wouldn't.

Embracing Sameness

There are certain things bloggers should do to fall in line with the conformed crowd. I have yet to see a successful new blog obtain readers without these devices.

  1. Join blog networking sites like MyBlogLog, MyBlogCatalog, and Entrecard. Without these sites, many of us cannot work on branding our sites, network with other bloggers, or even gain traffic to our sites.

  2. Use known conventions when creating our site. We don't want to have a site completely unusable. The sameness comes when we use traditional navigation features, unless our experimental navigation somehow sets us apart from the rest.

  3. English. Let's face it...pig latin would be hard to read and even harder to write. Don't do it.

The accepted conventions keep us tied closely to the definition of a weblog. If we veer to far from the norm, then we may not readily find traffic. Sameness should not identify our blog, only propel it towards its uniqueness. Jeff does a great job balancing his differences with his sameness. How about you?
