EntreCard Rules of Etiquette and Why They Shouldn't Matter

by Jeff 3/7/2008 12:30:00 PM

Water Cooler EntreCard GossipI just realized that EntreCard is consuming my time and my blog. This is not good. So this is going to be my last EntreCard post for a while. I love the service, I really do. But it is putting my priorities out of wack. Instead of sitting down to work on my next great blog post masterpiece, I find myself spending more time on my EntreCard dashboard. In the time I spend looking for a decent blog without a full ad queue to put my ad, I could probably bang out two or three posts that would set Digg on fire. Even when I have just a few minutes to spare, am I queuing up some new blog post outlines? No...I am clicking on my EntreCard inbox like a madman trying to make sure every card has a yellow border. I need to check myself.

Starting with this post I am setting some rules for myself. My blog first - EntreCard second. Before I check to see who dropped their card, I am going to do something constructive on my blog first. Even if its to add a comment on one of my own posts or come up with one sentence for a future post idea, I come first.

But....there is something I've really been dying to get off my chest that I am sure all of you can relate to. I just don't understand why some blogs that use EntreCard do stupid things that piss everyone off! So for these clueless morons, I came up with these simple Rules of Etiquette for using EntreCard. I am sure there are many more than I have listed below, so please add your rules in a comment.

EntreCard Rules of Etiquette

1. For the love of GOD don't make us search for your widget!!! Seriously! You want us to click on it right? Why are you making it hard to find? Once I even saw someone put the widget on a different page than their home page. Why would you do that? I only saw that once because I don't bother looking anymore. If you want to be a real EntreCard superstar, put your widget in an area that doesn't require us to scroll (ie - above the fold).

2. Do you really need music on your blog? This isn't MySpace. Do you know how disturbing music is to all the people in the office around me who are actually doing their job? I like to open multiple EC blogs in separate tabs of my browser. God forbid if they all had music.

3. Pop Up Ads? Really? This is just flat out saying "I'm greedy". If you have a blog that shows pop-up ads, I will never visit it again.

4. Don't make EC traffic worthless. This one is serious. Don't just click and go. If you find something that is truly interesting, leave a comment, Stumble it or Digg it. Otherwise all the traffic you get from EntreCard will be pointless.

Again, these are just some gripes I have about using EntreCard in general. But if I focus more on my blog and less on EntreCard, as I suggested earlier, they should not bother me as much. This is why I changed the title of this post from simply "EntreCard Rules of Etiquette".

It is Friday and I am sure that plenty of you are slacking off, just as I am. That is why I decided to give this post a topic of "Community Buzz". Posts in this topic are meant to encourage everyone to speak up and add their two cents. Are you waisting too much time on things other than your blog? Do you have anymore Rules of Etiquette for using EntreCard? Share them with us and contribute to the "buzz".

Happy Friday.

Jeff

Hey Jeff, good rules here.

I stopped power dropping for reasons of eyiquette. Now I only go on there with time to read the pages I visit.

Wow you summed up so many beefs I have. I also have been spending a lot of time with the entrecard dashboard and I need to stop!

But yes I hate having to search for the widget and slow sites are getting to me.

Thanks for sharing, it made me smile.

Dude, as far as I am concerned "it made me smile" is probably the best compliment you could ever get from your blog. Thanks Cuz.

Yes, EC is very time consuming Smile

Here's one of your rules I don't agree with.

For the love of GOD don't make us search for your widget!!

My widget is below the fold. Why? Becasue that's where I want it. I feel it makes my blog look cluttered if I place it rite at the top. I'm not going to ruin the look and feel of my blog just to make ec droppers life easier. Ec doesn't rule my blog. I do Smile

Yeah Entrecard can be a time hog. I am not sure how effective it is as a system but anything that helps out young blogs is worth testing.

I had to cut back on Entrecard. Like you, it was taking up way too much time. I still go there daily but don't drop 300 anymore.

I agree with much that you have to say here. I find music on blogs especially annoying, and now we are seeing autoplay videos and video adverts too.

Regarding pop-up ads, I would tend to agree. Although I was recently the victim of someone putting some sort of a pop-up script into one of the widgets I was using. So it may not always be the fault of the blog's owner. Saying that, it is the responsibility of the owner of the blog to remedy the situation as quickly as possible. (Which I hope I have - no sign of the damned pop-ups for a while).

Wow, thet's pretty crazy Kevin. Do you remember what widget allowed the problem? I know this issue happened a lot with MySpace because too many people would happily post random code on their page.

Rule of the day - don't put code on your blog unless you are sure what it does. If someone gives you a link with a <script> element, be cautious unless its Google or someone your trust. If you're not sure, let me know. I'll be happy to check it out.

I removed about 5 widgets, so don't know which one it was. They had all been in place for a while with no problems. I will probably restore some of them and see if the ads come back. If they do I could let you know. I'll certainly let the script's host know. But for now I am just glad that the ads are not appearing.

Great tips. we use a lot of EC ads and spend 15 to 30 minutes per day dropping. but I usually combine it with surfing other blogs I would read anyway.

Agreed. When I first joined Entrecard, I was so so focused on dropping EC. The next moment I realize what I was doing, I've already wasted 30mins to an hour...
Now, I just drop less than when I 1st joined....

Interesting post Nate. EntreCard is not without its flaws. I think it was a great concept from the start, but there is definitely room for people to abuse the original idea. Hopefully as the service continues to grow and gain popularity, some of these issues can be addressed.

I have only been using EntreCard for three or four days now, and I have to say that #1 on your list is dead on. I am so sick of having to send out the internet coast guard to locate the EC Widget on a site. One thing I've found is you get sent to a site that is advertising in the widget only to find they have no widget at all.
