Britney Injured In July 4th Fireworks Accident

by Jeff 7/4/2008 11:59:00 AM

What started out as a normal Fourth of July holiday celebration quickly turned to tragedy for Britney Spears. The queen of multi-tasking was apparently trying to light off fireworks while carrying her kid in one arm. Things quickly got out of control when the cigarette she was smoking fell out of her mouth and landed in the pile of fireworks being held by her two year old son. Britney quickly dropped her child and grabbed the pile of fireworks which started to go off in her hand. The child was unharmed but Britney suffered second degree burns and partial loss of her left pinky finger. After receiving a skin graph from her right butt cheek, Britney is expected to make a full recovery.

Gotcha! With an opening paragraph like that, you know it can only mean one thing. Time for the BuzzMyBlog Monthly Progress Report! Anyone who has been reading my blog knows I like to have a little fun with these posts (and maybe grab a little attention) before I Digg into a review of my last month of blogging. June was a busy and exciting month. Numbers were good. I had a few well-received posts, and I learned a few things along the way. Oh...and as far as I know, Britney Spears is just fine (well...as fine as Britney can be anyway).

Traffic Statistics

Numbers were up slightly from last month, but not as much as I hoped. Page Views were almost identical at 4,247. Number of visits were up from last month to 3,218 from 2,555 unique visitors. My feed subscribers fell short of my goal of 150, but were still up at 127. All in all, I am pretty happy but I will need to work harder in July to keep the upward trend.

What I Did Well

I try to be careful not to get sucked into too many social media websites. They can be an awful distraction to your blog. Ignoring them completely however, can cause you to miss out on some great ways to promote and publicize your content. Such was the case early in June when I discovered how to really use Digg effectively. I wrote a great post on The Truth About Digg that brought in a great deal of traffic and got Dugg over 170 times. It was on its way to making it to the front page of Digg when BOOM! It got buried.

I had another great article about Optimizing AdSense to earn more money. It got Digg 92 times then suddenly also got buried.

Noticing a trend here? While Digg brought in some really good traffic for me, it also taught me a valuable lesson. Diggers hate bloggers. It is a fact of life as true as birds fly, fish swim in the ocean, and Britney is a bad mom. Diggers expect to find entertainment at Digg, bloggers try to promote themselves on Digg. This is a conflict of interest that allows Diggers to beat up on bloggers with the brutal Bury button. My post on the Truth About Digg got buried simply because it was about Digg. WTF? My article on AdSense was buried because apparently writing about AdSense is considered spam. Again, WTF? Well, at least I got some good traffic out of it. But going forward, I am going to stick with my other blog, Buzz Pirates, when it comes to submitting to Digg.

I had a couple other posts in June that got a good response from fellow bloggers. I wrote about choosing a niche to Make Money Online, warning new bloggers to stay away from the Make Money Online (MMO) niche if they want to make the most money. I also offered some valuable tips on focusing on your blog when you have limited time. Of course, the Weekly Buzz is still going strong and I met some great new friends. All in all, June was a very good month.

What I Didn't Do Well

Remember when I said social media sites can be a big distraction? Well I learned how to use Digg effectively, but yeah...I did very little else to promote my blog. That's just not good. I didn't do any guest posts, which I was hoping to do. I also didn't comment on other blogs as much as I would have liked. I think these are the two most important things you can do to promote yourself, and I noticed a decline of regular traffic from not doing so. I will make an effort to get back to the basics for July.

Goals for July

In May, I had a nice guest post on ProBlogger. In June, I created a little attention on Digg. My goal in July is to continue this effort and do something "outside of the box" to help promote my blog. I make it a permanent goal of mine to always try something different to earn traffic each month. Some things work better than others, but it always keeps things interesting and forces you to get creative. I encourage you to try some new ways of promoting yourself as well.

Maybe its the summer time rolling into full swing, but I have also been noticing a general decline in the Make Money Online niche. To be honest, I am pretty sick of it anyway. While I enjoy offering advice about earning money online, my blog really isn't a Make Money blog. I don't swamp you with annoying ads or pop-ups that probably could earn me some decent income. Instead, I enjoy writing quality content that hopefully helps you with your blog. My blog has become less of a money blog and more of a blogging blog. And I am happy with that.

I am going to continue with this metamorphosis in July and publish a few tutorials that will really help you improve your blog. Keep an eye out for some beginner step by step introductions to PHP, CSS, WordPress, and a lot of other topics that every blogger should know. If you have any requests, please let me know. So you don't miss a thing, sign up for my feed now!

Happy Fourth of July everyone!

Jeff

Hey you had me going there! I must admit social media sites are really distracting--I'm hooked on them! When it comes to these sites <em>StumbleUpon</em> has definitely treated me well. Like <em>Digg</em> I didn't know how to use StumbleUpon properly.

Once I learned how you can benefit from it I started receiving about 40 visits per day from SU. Now it's up to about 70 visits per day.

As far as commenting goes . . . sometimes I get sick of it. I only comment if the article intrigued me; commenting for the purpose of traffic is good, but I seem to get stuck and not have anything to say most of the time. I definitely need to check out some new methods of getting traffic.

Hope you hit your goal of 150 subscribers this month!

Man.. you were pissing me off with that opening paragraph, I was about to unsubscribe from your blog, until I got to the next paragraph and realized it was just a joke. jajaja. I hate reading shit about Britney speares.

anyway, good stats for the month of June, your blog is growing slowly but surely, and that's encouraging.

PS. I just arrived home from the fourth of July celebration here in Boston, and the fireworks were phenomenal..

good weekend man.

Luis - Thanks for the comment!

Nelson - Ha! Sorry about that. I hate reading about Britney too, which is why I was totally mocking it. I'm glad you didn't unsubscribe!

Tom - I had been in touch with Darren a few times from some of my earlier "Ask A Pro" posts. When it came time to do the guest post, I shot him an email with the topic first. He liked the idea, so a week later I emailed the article to him and he posted it the next day.

Jeff I am so glad you let the humourous side out now and then on here and full on over at Buzz Pirates, it is my cup of tea for sure.

Look forward to stuff you listed for July and the future, keep it up and yes it is way easier to blog when it is -30 and dark.

Okay... don't take this the wrong way, but I don't understand why your web stats are so low. Take all of the following with the good intention in which it is delivered. Smile

I would have thought the guest post on Problogger alone would have triggered tens of thousands of page views.

My personal blog (linked below) - which focuses on self improvement/physical fitness and only started on March 31, 2008 - gets about 20,000 page views each month, and loads of visits.

Here's an image I've just grabbed from Sitemeter:

iamsheamus.com/images/sitemeter_july6_2008.jpg

I've had a couple of posts do well on Reddit, write for a couple of other popular blogs and it helped lately that the real Frank Dux (of Bloodsport fame) has suddenly become my #1 commentator but still... my RSS subscriber number is slightly less than yours, too.

I think your blog is well written with decent content and I'd have thought your numbers would have been ten times what they are, to be honest! All I can assume is that you're don't self-promote at all, or well, which I guess is kind of what you've hinted at above.

However, again, I'd have thought an article with 127 Diggs would generate thousands and thousands of page views.

Something doesn't add up! Smile

I wouldn't worry too much about being buried on Digg. I would, however, advise getting clued up on Reddit - which is a much easier site to reach the front page and generate loads of traffic - and I'd also recommend abandoning the Kick and Dzone submission links in your posts and replacing with Digg, SU and Reddit (keep Del.icio.us). You have these in your Feedburner feed - why not on the site as well?

I comment on quite a few blogs in my niche and while each only brings in a visit or two a day as a result, they all add up. Likewise, if you’re not SEOing your articles to death (using Wordpress’ All-In-One SEO pack) you must! For example, if I copy and paste the title of this article (Britney Injured In July 4th Fireworks Accident) into Google, and hit search, while it does bring your blog up as the #1 return, it doesn’t actually link to the article, but simply to your site.

I think if you consider a few of these suggestions you can double or triple your traffic in a month, to be honest. I wouldn’t settle for anything less!

Cheers,
Sheamus

Hey Sheamus. I appreciate your comment and the intention in which it is delivered. Wink

In all seriousness, your point is well received. I AM disappointed about my traffic. I receive a lot of positive feedback about my blog. The number of returning visitors is high and the average time on my site is also high. That tells me that people don't just visit my site, they actually read it. I am happy about that.

As you suggested, I don't really promote myself as I should. Somewhere along the line, I decided to focus on the writing and see if I can grow this blog the old fashioned way - with good, quality content. I am sure there is a lot more I can do to get my blog out there, but if I have to choose between writing a good article and promoting myself, I'll pick the former.

But REALLY I think my biggest problem is the niche that I initially focused this blog on. I am starting to move away from the Make Money Online niche and focus on blogging and web site development tips in general. I'll still offer advice about making money online, but the entire MMO niche just sucks if you ask me. I just want to help people with their blogs. By incorrectly labeling this a money blog from the beginning, I caused myself to miss out on a great deal of traffic.

Things are still going well online for me. I am happy to report that my humor and entertainment blog - http://www.buzzpirates.com has received well over 12,000 visitors for the month of June. Its such an easier niche and I am glad it is doing well. It allows me to keep this blog sincere and honest. At the end of the day, if I can give my readers a hand and help them with their blog, then I am happy. The number of actual visitors I get is much less of a concern.

I'm amazed at how well Buzz Pirates has done out of the box. I think you're spot on with the MMO niche, because it is so flooded many people don't visit. I think humor, sports and definitely graphic arts sites are going to be much bigger. You saw my numbers for the tutorials I published and they were huge. I think when you do your tutorials you'll see the same improvements. Good work!

Perhaps you could do a tutorial on the proper use of the All-in-one-seo plugin. I have it installed, but honestly have no idea how to use it yet.

You're right about Digg. a different mentality seems to prevail there.
The technical stuff seems to always hold sway. I guess that's an image they've been trying to get away from, only partially successflly. But, the same rules do not seem to applay as Reddit and Stumble.
